The flat rates
As a sole trader, you can claim your van or car costs as a flat rate for each business mile, instead of adding up fuel, insurance, repairs, servicing and the rest. This is HMRC's simplified expenses for vehicles.
| Vehicle | 2026 to 2027 | Before 6 April 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Cars and vans, first 10,000 miles | 55p | 45p |
| Cars and vans, after 10,000 miles | 25p | 25p |
| Motorcycles | 24p | 24p |
The first-10,000-miles rate went up from 45p to 55p on 6 April 2026, so check any older calculator or spreadsheet you use.
A made-up example
A roofer drives 12,000 business miles in their van in the 2026 to 2027 tax year.
- 10,000 miles × 55p = £5,500
- 2,000 miles × 25p = £500
- They can claim £6,000 as an expense. With profit in the basic-rate band, that's about £1,560 less Income Tax and Class 4 National Insurance.
The rules to know
- Who can use it: sole traders, and partnerships with no company as a partner. Limited companies can't.
- Not if you've claimed the van already: you can't use the flat rate for a vehicle you've claimed capital allowances on, or put through as an expense when working out your profits.
- Once you start, you stay: after you use the flat rate for a vehicle, you must keep using it for as long as you use that vehicle for the business. You don't have to use it for all your vehicles.
- Parking and other travel go on top: you can still claim parking and things like train fares.
- Keep a record of your business miles: the date, where from and to, and the miles. A note on each job of the trip there does it.
A van that does a lot of miles and cost a lot to buy may be worth more claimed at actual cost. GOV.UK's simplified expenses checker compares the two. Source: GOV.UK, simplified expenses for vehicles.
