What each one is known for

Tradify

Job management priced per user, with quotes, invoices, scheduling, online acceptance, progress invoicing for deposits and stages, and sync with Xero, Sage and QuickBooks Online. Its pricing page also lists digital electrical certificates such as the EICR, EIC and PAT, and an optional instant website at £10 a month.

Powered Now

A UK app that says more than 4,000 UK tradespeople use it. The one-user Business plan covers quotes, invoices and payment links, customer and job management, the diary and expenses, with Making Tax Digital built in. Professional adds certificates and custom forms, including electrical certificates and EICRs, unlimited text and email, VAT returns and Xero and QuickBooks; Premium adds a customer portal.

YourTradebase

One plan at £29 a month plus VAT, with extra users at £15 each and two months free if you pay for the year. The 30-day trial needs no card, and if you don't pay afterwards the account becomes a free one with usage limits.

ServiceM8

Priced by the number of jobs a month rather than by user, with unlimited users on paid plans and a free plan for up to 30 jobs a month. Every plan includes recurring jobs and deposits, and customers can pay by card in the app or from a link.

Knockround

One price for the whole business, built around rounds and jobs together: regular customers come back on the day they're due at their own interval, and one-off work runs on a board from enquiry to paid. Every invoice has a Pay button for Apple Pay, Google Pay or card, by link or by a QR code on your phone, and Knockround adds nothing to Stripe's fee. It also matches bank transfers from your statement, raises prices across the round and shows what the work is worth. Messages go from your own WhatsApp or texts. Direct Debit and VAT invoicing aren't in it yet, and it doesn't do certificates.

How to choose

  1. Do you need certificates in the app? Electricians and gas engineers who want EICRs or other certificates in the same system should look at Tradify, Powered Now Professional or ServiceM8's forms. Knockround runs alongside your certificate software.
  2. Do you need VAT returns or Making Tax Digital? Powered Now lists both. Knockround doesn't do VAT invoicing yet.
  3. How many of you are there? Per-user prices add up with a team, and ServiceM8's price rises with the number of jobs. Work out the monthly cost for your whole team and your busiest month.
  4. Do the same customers come back? Cleaners, gardeners and anyone doing annual services need repeat visits that look after themselves. Knockround brings each customer back on their own interval, from weekly to once a year; ServiceM8 lists recurring jobs.
  5. What will you pay for one person? For one person doing more than 30 jobs a month, Knockround's £19.99 was the lowest published price of these when we checked.

Questions

What's the best app for tradesmen in the UK?

It depends on the work. If you need certificates and VAT in one place, look at Tradify or Powered Now. If you have a big team and few jobs, ServiceM8's per-job pricing may suit you. If you want repeat customers and quoted jobs together, with card payments, at one low price, try Knockround. Use the free trials with your own jobs before you decide.

Is there a free app for tradespeople?

ServiceM8 has a free plan for up to 30 jobs a month, and YourTradebase becomes a free account with limits after its trial. The others offer free trials. Our free job quote template works without signing up.

Can I take card payments without a card reader?

Yes. With Knockround your customer pays on their own phone, from the invoice link or by scanning the QR code on yours. How card payments work.
