Stripe's UK card fees

Can you pass the fee on?

Not as a separate charge. Since 13 January 2018, UK law has stopped businesses adding a fee for paying with a personal debit or credit card (The Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012, regulation 6A). So "+ 2% if paying by card" on an invoice isn't allowed for most customers.

What you can do is build the cost into your prices, the same as fuel or insurance. On an £85 job paid by a standard UK card, the fee is £1.48. The day rate calculator and the pricing guide show where costs like this go.

Is it worth it?

A bank transfer usually costs nothing, and cash costs nothing to take. But both have costs of their own: chasing, trips back, trips to the bank, and money that arrives days or weeks late, or not at all. A customer who can pay by card or Apple Pay on the doorstep pays there and then.

  • Offer card alongside bank transfer and cash, not instead of them.
  • Send the payment link with the invoice, or show a QR code at the door when the job's done.
  • Compare what the fees cost you in a month with what late payments cost you. The guide to chasing an unpaid invoice covers the rest.

Card payments in Knockround

In Knockround, every invoice has a Pay button. Customers pay by Apple Pay, Google Pay or card from a WhatsApp link or by scanning the QR code on your phone, and the money goes to your own Stripe account. Stripe's fee is the one above, and Knockround adds nothing on top. How card payments work.
